How does it know which year's birthday to count down to?

It compares today's date to this year's birthday. If this year's birthday has already passed, it counts down to next year's instead — so the countdown always points to the nearest upcoming birthday.

Does the countdown update in real time?

Yes — the days, hours, minutes, and seconds update every second while the page is open, so you can watch it tick down live.

What happens on the actual birthday?

The countdown is replaced with a birthday message and the age being turned, instead of showing all zeros.

Is the birth date I enter sent anywhere?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser with JavaScript — nothing is transmitted or stored.
