How to use the scientific notation calculator
- 1
Enter the first number as 6.02e23, 1.5 x 10^3, or a plain number.
- 2
Choose add, subtract, multiply, or divide and enter the second number.
- 3
Optionally set the significant figures to round the output.
- 4
Copy the result from scientific, engineering, E notation, or decimal form.
Questions
- What input formats are accepted?
- You can type plain numbers (0.00045), E notation (4.5e-4), or the written form with a multiplication sign and exponent such as 4.5 x 10^-4 or 4.5×10^-4. Commas are ignored.
- What is the difference between scientific and engineering notation?
- Scientific notation keeps exactly one digit before the decimal point (1.23 × 10^8). Engineering notation restricts the exponent to a multiple of 3 (123 × 10^6), which lines up with SI prefixes like kilo, mega, and micro.
- How precise are the results?
- Calculations use standard double-precision floating point, which holds about 15–17 significant digits. Very long exact decimals may be rounded, and numbers beyond about 1.8 × 10^308 overflow.
- Is my input sent anywhere?
- No. Everything is calculated locally in your browser — nothing is transmitted or stored.
