Questions
- How do I find the pre-tax price from a receipt total?
- Switch to "Extract tax from total" and enter the total you paid along with the tax rate. The tool divides the total by (1 + rate ÷ 100) to back out the original pre-tax price — simply subtracting the percentage from the total would give the wrong answer.
- Why can't I just subtract the tax percentage from the total?
- Tax is calculated on the pre-tax price, not on the total. If an item is $100 with 10% tax, the total is $110 — but 10% of $110 is $11, not the $10 of actual tax, so subtracting straight from the total overstates the tax.
- Where do I find my local sales tax rate?
- Sales tax rates vary by country, state/province, and sometimes city or county — check your local tax authority's website for the combined rate that applies to your purchase location.
- Is my financial data sent anywhere?
- No. All math runs locally in your browser — nothing is transmitted or stored.
